How to Properly Care for your Hearing Aids

Individuals who use hearing aids often rely on their devices on a day to day basis. Hearing aids not only help your ability to hear but can also have a tremendous effect on your quality of life. Because hearing aids have such a profound effect on your life and can make a dent in your wallet, it makes sense to want to preserve and protect them for as long as possible. Just like everything in life, attention and preventive maintenance are necessary if you want to prevent premature failure.

Avoid potentially costly repairs and spending time without your hearing aids and learn how to properly care for your hearing aids by following these simple hearing aid maintenance tips.

  1. ALWAYS handle your hearing aids with care. Also, when handling your hearing aids make sure that your hands are clean and dry.
  2. Invest in the proper aftercare for your hearing aids, and never, ever, use solvents, alcohol, or cleaning agents on your device.
  3. Wipe down your device every morning with a clean and dry, soft cloth or tissue. Make sure you remove any dried up ear wax off of your device.
  4. Avoid getting your hearing aids wet, so don’t wear them if you are swimming, taking a shower, or going out into the heavy rain.
  5. Never, ever place your hearing aid in extreme temperatures. For instance, your car’s glove compartment on a hot summer day or a frigid winter day. Just don’t do it.
  6. When not in use, always store your hearing aids in a cool, dry place and make sure they are kept away from moisture and heat.
  7. Have wet hearing aids? Never use a microwave or hair dryer to dry your device. Instead, remove the batteries and place it in a dry storage kit with the battery door open overnight.
  8. Make sure you remove your hearing aids when you are applying perfume, lotion, or hairspray. Some chemicals can have a detrimental effect on your device, so make sure you give time for the product to dry before you put your hearing aids back in.
  9. From time to time, have a hearing care professional inspect your hearing aids to ensure they are functioning properly.
